A gorgeous and rare open lot in Napa Valley surrounded by vineyards and views of the Stags Leap range to the east inspired a destination retreat home which recalls the modest agricultural origins of the valley itself. An exploration with simple structures was chosen to allow the natural environment and landscape design to have greater presence. The casual placement and change in materials of the detached two-story barn/garage is used to help create a sense of arrival while recalling the typical farmyard “accretion” of structures over time. The house was designed by HDA in collaboration with Summit Professional Builders and Rhyne Designs Landscape.
